Otelixizumab Named One of "100 Great Investigational Drugs - 2010"
R&D Directions March 2010 issue (vol. 16, no.3) just named otelixizumab one of its 100 great investigational drugs in 2010. They selected compounds in development that show promise in major or growing therapeutic areas with unmet medical needs and that have an innovative mechanism of action.
Otelixizumab is a targeted T cell modulator designed to induce immunologic remission in patients with autoimmune type 1 diabetes with a single short course of therapy, thereby inhibiting further progression. Otelixizumab is a unique monoclonal antibody that targets the CD3 receptor found on T cells and is believed to have an innovative dual mechanism of action. First, otelixizumab treatment down-regulates the T effector cells that direct the attack on the β-cells of the pancreas and cause type 1 diabetes and second, otelixizumab treatment up-regulates the T regulatory cells that prevent further autoimmune attack.
